Understanding Indexed Universal Life (IUL) Insurance
Learn how indexed universal life insurance works, where its flexibility can help, and how policy costs, caps, loans, and funding levels can affect long-term results.
IUL Crediting, Costs, and Policy Risks
Indexed universal life insurance is permanent coverage with flexible premiums and cash value interest crediting linked to a market index. It can support protection and accumulation goals, but performance depends on funding, policy charges, crediting terms, loans, and the insurer’s current assumptions. A licensed professional can help you review an illustration and compare alternatives.
An IUL combines permanent life insurance with cash value. After policy charges are deducted, available cash value may earn interest using a formula linked to a market index. You are not invested directly in the index, and credited interest is affected by the policy’s floor, cap, participation rate, spread, and other terms.
IUL may suit people who need permanent protection and value premium or death-benefit flexibility. It is more complex than term life and may require substantially higher, carefully monitored funding. Read our full IUL vs Whole Life guide to compare guarantees, charges, illustration assumptions, and alternatives before deciding.
A 0% index-crediting floor can prevent a negative index return from creating negative credited interest for that segment. It does not prevent policy charges, loans, withdrawals, or insufficient premiums from reducing cash value or causing the policy to lapse (for a detailed comparison, see IUL vs. Fixed Indexed Annuity guide).
Cash value may receive indexed interest at the end of a crediting period. The amount depends on the selected index strategy and current cap, participation rate, spread, and floor. Policy charges are deducted separately, so cash value is not guaranteed to grow every year. More in-depth information is available in our full guide to IUL illustrations.
You may be able to access available cash value through withdrawals or policy loans. Loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and the death benefit; withdrawals can also affect coverage. Distributions may be taxable if the policy is a modified endowment contract, is surrendered, or lapses with an outstanding loan. Consult a qualified tax professional.
Beneficiaries generally receive the policy’s death benefit income-tax-free under current federal law. The amount depends on the selected death-benefit option and is reduced by outstanding loans or withdrawals. Estate and tax treatment can vary, so individual guidance may be appropriate.
Take the Next Step
An IUL can provide permanent protection and may build cash value, but it is not appropriate for every goal or budget. Review both guaranteed and non-guaranteed illustration values, stress-test premiums and loans, and compare term, whole life, and retirement-income alternatives before applying.

Both can provide permanent coverage. Whole life emphasizes scheduled premiums and contractual guarantees, while IUL offers flexible funding and index-linked crediting with more variables to monitor.

Term life is generally simpler and less expensive for temporary protection. IUL is permanent coverage and may build cash value, but it usually requires more funding, monitoring, and tolerance for policy complexity.

IUL is primarily life insurance with a death benefit. A fixed indexed annuity is primarily an accumulation or income product. Retirement-income goals may warrant comparing both with a licensed professional.
